Provenance study of the limestone used in construction and restoration of the Batalha Monastery (Portugal)

<p class="Abstract">To assess the provenance of limestones used in construction and restoration Batalha Monastery central Portugal, stone samples collected from monument five limestone quarries region surrounding building were investigated by energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (ED-XRF), powder diffractometry (PXRD) thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Ca-Sr binary diagrams ED-XRF result indicated source different parts monastery. Thin-section observation supplemented petrographic evidence for this identification. PXRD TGA also to acquire information on mineral chemical composition stones. Preliminary results suggest that monastery baluster was made Valinho do Rei or Reguengo Fetal quarries, whereas part church railing, north-aisle eaves arch Royal Cloister with Pidiogo Cabeço Roxo quarries.</p>
